It’s your big day.
You’ve had your final round of therapy and your oncologist wants you to go home and wait 3 months while they wait to see if the treatment has worked. They’re confident it has and you should be fine. Well done and bye. You are politely, yet coldly, escorted out onto the sidewalk outside the oncology department to contemplate what the hell has just happened to you. When your eyes finally adjust to the natural light and you lift your head to look out upon the “real” world, there, across the road is your family, lover, children, and friends holding balloons and a banner that says ‘Congratulations!’ and ‘Welcome Back!’ They are all looking at you with their high hopes and their anticipation for your speedy recovery. They all look so happy.
