Great news that Zytiga is approved – I assume this is approval for use before chemotherapy fails.
EXCITING NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN CANCER TREATMENT
NEW -MORE EFFECTIVE- DRUGS RECENTLY MADE AVAILABLE FOR GENERAL USE:
-The FDA has approved a drug, abiratarone (Zytiga), a more potent androgen blocker, which has been proven both to delay the progression of prostate cancer and to significantly prolong survival in advanced disease.
-Another newly approved drug is enzalutamide (Xtandi), an androgen-receptor signaling inhibitor. Trials have shown that the use of this drug in patients with advanced and drug-resistant prostate cancer extends overall survival by an average of five months. Both Zytiga and Xtandi are commercially available now.
-In addition, a more potent cytotoxic drug, cabazitaxel (Jevtana), has been FDA approved for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer. The use of this drug has been shown to prolong survival in patients resistant to all other drugs.
