This holiday season has been interesting for me. A combination of pain and good times. My stomach problems reached a crescendo on Dec 22, while we were out of town visiting relatives. I developed a dull, intense stomach pain and nausea. They started at about 9 PM and lasted until 5 AM the next morning. I almost went to the ER, but I’m glad I didn’t. My wife knows an Internist where we were visiting, and I was able to see him at 1 PM on the 23rd. I passed the physical exam, which meant there wasn’t a problem requiring hospitalization. Yeah! But I still might have an ulcer and should definitely proceed with the endoscopy when I get back to Dallas. He told me to take Gaviscon (instead of the Pepto-Bismol I was taking), Nexxium or Prilosec (which I was already taking), and Xanax (to help with nausea). That’s it. There apparently are no super antacids/stomach pain relievers only available by prescription. He did write me a prescription for pain pills, but said there was a good chance they would nauseate me even more. Wonderful. I would have been so upset, if I’d gone to the ER to get Gaviscon…
As of today, I’ve had these stomach problems for 10 weeks. Because of the holidays I couldn’t get in to see a GI until Jan 7, and that’s just for the initial consult. My wife bullied them into scheduling the endoscopy on the 9th. They didn’t want to schedule the endoscopy until after the consult, but Lisa was very tenacious and wore them down. Hopefully, by the end of next week I’ll be on the road to recovery.
I don’t want to leave anyone with the impression that my holidays were horrible. There were several days my stomach calmed down (no rhyme or reason why). During those times, I really enjoyed being with my relatives. Strictly speaking they’re my in-laws, but they feel like family to me. We spent Christmas together and went out for dinner several times. My only regret is that my sister-in-law couldn’t make it.
Here’s hoping 2014 is great for all of us!
