Looking over the searches that lead folks to my blog I noticed something like “why is low dose Prednisone always prescribed with Zytiga“. I actually wondered the same thing when I read about Zytiga, so I asked the oncologist today.
Zytiga shuts down the production of testosterone from the adrenal gland (and the testes and hormone resistant prostate cancer, as I understand it). This is a good thing, as it removes a source of food for prostate cancer. Unfortunately, it shuts down production of more than just testosterone. The Prednisone supplies stuff the body needs after the adrenal gland stops producing it when on Zytiga.
